“Genuïns, això és una altra lliga” is a documentary by 3Cat’s Sense ficció program that delves into the daily lives of the Genuine League, the world’s first official football competition for people with intellectual disabilities. By following players from various Catalan teams—such as Barça, Espanyol, Girona, Nàstic de Tarragona, and Reus—the production delivers a profound portrait, completely steering clear of a sympathetic or paternalistic gaze. The protagonists are treated as true athletes, showcasing their personalities, ambitions, and talents both on and off the pitch.
Beyond the competition and the game itself, the documentary honestly addresses realities of their daily lives that are often kept invisible. It tackles complex and deeply human issues such as the quest for independence, mental health management, addiction, and personal loss, thereby shattering the stereotypes and prejudices surrounding intellectual disability. Ultimately, it is an emotional chronicle of how football becomes a tool for inclusion, camaraderie, and brotherhood, proving that the real league for these players is earning their place and making their voices heard in society.
